Amber Walker, flute + electronics

Amber Walker is a freelance flutist and music educator based out of Phoenix, AZ. Ms. Walker has performed with the Longview Symphony in Longview, TX, the Flagstaff Symphony in Flagstaff, AZ, and in masterclasses for Alexa Still and Eugenia Zuckerman. She was the First Place recipient in the graduate/professional solo division of the 2015 Denise Jennings Solo/Ensemble Competition and the Third Place recipient in the undergraduate division of the 2012 Arizona Flute Society Competition.

Ms. Walker is most passionate about the performance of 20th Century and Contemporary music. An especially enthusiastic performer of works by living composers, Ms. Walker is endlessly fascinated by the opportunity to explore and experiment with the boundaries of sound and color. Ms. Walker is a founding member and former flutist of Quintessence–the student wind quintet at Stephen F. Austin State University–with whom she premiered the chamber works Through the Valley by composer Frank Sartain and Fluidity by composer and former Quintessence hornist, Will Williams. As a member of the Northern Arizona University Wind Symphony, she recorded portions of Michael Markowski’s score for season 2 of the web series Voyage Trekkers. Ms. Walker has also collaborated with composers in the creation of solo works for her instrument. Her most recent project of this kind was a unique, multi-disciplinary collaboration with composer and saxophonist Keaton Garrett. Inspired by a piece of flash fiction written by Ms. Walker, The Sparrow explores extended techniques, drone elements, and concepts of spatial music.

Ms. Walker received her Master of Music in Flute Performance degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX, where she studied with Dr. Christina Guenther. She also holds undergraduate degrees in Music Education and Music Performance from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ, where she studied flute with Dr. Emily McKay. Ms. Walker is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, Sigma Alpha Iota International Women’s Music Fraternity, and The National Flute Association.

Sunn Trio

“There’s a woozy, heatstroke feel to the band’s innovative blend of surf rock, free jazz, mystical drone, and world music. Consistently recording and releasing material via self-distributed cassettes, the Trio’s sound mutates in concert, with fantastic flurries of distorted guitars butting up against mantric psychedelic saxophone runs and looping bass.” – Jason Patrick Woodbury
